Black Economic Empowerment is a policy of the South African government which aims to facilitate broader participation in the economy by black people. A form of affirmative action, it is intended especially to redress the inequalities created by apartheid.

The policy states that there must be standards for BBBEE business accreditation. The accreditation is not the same for all businesses; it varies depending on size of turnover of the business and, to some extent, the industry.

There are 3 categories for accreditation, Exempted Micro Enterprises (EME), Qualified Small Enterprises (QSE) and the General category. Each category has their own rules for compliance.
